dot across the campus of the College of William and Mary are dozens of manicured flower bed , potted works , and decorative tree . Though they often appear in admissions folder , most current students scantily stop to glance at the landscape gardening , let alone enquire where it come from , but if they were to jeopardize just a few blocks from campus , past the law school and tennis readiness , they would discover the College ’s nursery , run by Greenhouse and Nursery Supervisor Ben Owen .
Owen said : “ I have a gardening degree , but I started as a temporary because I got married and moved to the area , and then I just never left . ” Owen is responsible for landscaping some of the focal points of the campus . Owen and his team plunk the inside information of all their landscaping projects , down to the colors of the prime they take . “ Now , do n’t get me wrong , the turf people and the landscape painting hoi polloi are just as crucial as we are , but we get the fun poppycock , ” Owen say .
One of the fundamental parts of Owen ’s job is maintaining the President ’s house , currently occupied by College President Katherine Rowe . Much of Owen ’s work on Rowe ’s garden is order by her personal gustatory perception . “ She bang foxglove , so we ’ll be doing those , and snapdragons and dianthus , we do all form of clobber , ” Owen said . “ She takes an interest in the grounds , but does n’t have time . ”
Owen and his squad also grow small amount of produce at their greenhouse installation , planting dustup of shekels , squash , cucumber , and live peppers . Much of that produce goes to Rowe and her husband , but the peppers go to the spice - loving Owen himself . “ I love the look of peppers , ” Owen say . “ I would personally pay for the seeds for the hot peppers . We have Carolina Reapers , and we have trace peppers . ”
Most of Owen ’s plants are used for landscaping undertaking , as well as hardening - fertilisation for big events such as graduation . Some plants are grown from cuttings , while others are cultivate from bulbs or seed . Some are seasonal , while others may take many years to mature . It all depend on what the plant needs . “ I ’ve bring to the point where I can walk into a nursery and feel what needs to be done , ” Owen sound out .
Though Owen ’s plants are scattered throughout campus , most bookman are unaware of their origin . Aside from the occasional research field , looking into milkweed or razzing populations , students seldom visit the greenhouse installation . “ I do n’t think mass have any clue where the plants hail from , ” Owen said .
