Setting Up A Micro-Farm
As we discourse my travels , Rachel and I chosefive principles to steer us as we set up our new micro farm :
These principle help balance the life we want with the work that we are doing . They allow us to farm and go better .
Starting A Micro-Farm With 5 Principles
These are principles that we try on to follow even today , though we are a long style from mastering them . The momentum and incentives to get big , do more , and trade food further away from home are around us all the time . The default mode in our economy is constant growth .
Our five principle are like anchorperson : they ground our decisions against the lure of getting bigger .
More specifically , here is how these estimate shaped our petite farm .
1. Leverage Constraints
Carefully set limits of size , time , and clientele shape at the start .
We started by value the scale of farm we wanted , given our new reality of farm with fry . How many hours did we need to commit to the business organization ? How many demesne did we need to raise in ordering to meet our financial goal ? How far away should we deliver our food for thought ?
The author with boy Arlo . Having kid has helped me appreciate what it means to go well .
Carefully select boundaries helped us keep our focus during our 12 month of building , and they proceed to maneuver us even now .
2. BuildJustEnough (Then Maximize Fixed Costs)
utilise the right amount of substructure : not too much , not too little .
We worked hard to establish a just enough farm , where every bit of infrastructure would be well used . We design our farm taking cues from efficient and small - plate preindustrial farm-place model that relied on multipurpose spaces and creative farm layout that made the most of every straight foot .
3. Essentialize Your Micro-Farm
Focus on the most lively harvest and news report .
The next task was to edit , or to separate the vital few from the lilliputian many , as Vilfredo Pareto , an Italian economist , once put it . According to Pareto , roughly 80 percent of outcomes stem from 20 pct of causes ( the “ vital few ” ) .
Thus , about 20 percent of our time , energy , and travail was belike produce 80 percentage of our earnings . We used this concept to carefully pick out five nidus harvest and a little smattering of invoice that rules of order on a coherent basis .
We can weigh on fair predictable weekly orders from our grocery and eating house write up . This smashed focus is a primal rationality behind our financial stability , and it allows a workload that feel balanced , with enough clock time for family outside of farming .
4. Simplify Fieldwork
Farm with the simplest approach potential , with just a few tools .
Next , we set out to simplify our work . Could we farm with few putz ? Could we fix growing beds with few step ? Could we farm with less digging , less gas , less fertilizer , and less charge plate ? Could we wash lettuce with less water ? Every appendage could be simplify . It was just a matter of discovering how .
5. Localize
Put the residential area at the center of the farm .
In The Lean Farm , I pen about genchi gembutsu , the Japanese product - design practice of listening deeply to customers to thoroughly understand them and what they are willing to pay for .
At our new farm , we wanted to add another concept : Gandhi ’s “ spirit of Swadeshi , ” or ego - reliance at the village level . How might we design a farm that is deeply woven into the local community ?
