Plants that earn their keep in the garden
Keith Irvine is sharing photos with us today — some close - up expression at the stars of his Zone 3 garden in Oxdrift , Ontario .
I contend for year to get a decent ripe specimen of this mixed bag of amaranthus(Amaranthus‘Early Splendor ’ , one-year ) . The secret to achiever for me seems to be to gradually replant them from small cells up to 4 - column inch flock in the greenhouse and then to add slow - handout 14 - 14 - 14fertilizerpellets to thesoil mixfor the net 4 - in peck . They seem to perform well in very large containers rather than in the ground .
I jazz these small show - offs(Gazania‘Daybreak Red Stripe ’ , Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) . They see like each petal was meticulously painted with the brush of a skilled artist .

Zinnia‘Key Lime Pie ’ ( yearly ) withVerbena‘Tuscany Scarlet ’ ( zone 9–11 or as an annual )
You ’ve set about to roll in the hay rudbeckias . They are breathtakingly beautiful and have exceedingly long - last blooms . This one isRudbeckia‘Cherokee Sunset ’ ( Zones 3–7 but normally grown as an annual ) .
This iochroma(Iochromahybrid , Zones 8–11 or as annual ) was a late - season leverage . I had seen it earlier but passed because of price , but when my girl gave me a gift credentials for that greenhouse for Father ’s 24-hour interval , it did n’t take me long to figure out how to pass it . It is ahummingbird favorite .

I do n’t know the name of this gorgeous red daylily(Hemerocallishybrid , Zones 3–8 ) . It was give to me by a recent gardening friend . I visited him in his final hebdomad , and he had his wife tag it for me to dig it up in the spring . It is a precious memory board of Bob .
‘ Fire Twister ’ assumed sunflower(Heliopsishelianthoides , Zones 3–9 ) is anew perennialthat I just purchased last spring . It is nowhere near the brilliant bolshy it was picture as but is beautiful notwithstanding .
Giant fleeceflower(Persicariapolymorpha , Zones 3–9 ) is a “ must have ” recurrent for big blank space . It grows 6 to 8 feet marvelous and at least 12 feet wide-cut in my garden . The flowers get along out white-hot and last all summer long , ending up near brown by fall . This photo was lease mid - August .

‘ Karl Foerster ’ grass(Calamagrostis‘Karl Foerster ’ , Zones 3–9 ) is my favoriteornamental grassfor Zone 3 . It is extremely well behaved and not at all invasive . It ’s resiliency to wind and rain is simply astonishing . At the end of a storm it can look all twisted and dead set , but a day or so after it is stand stalwart again .
Here is a smorgasbord ofsucculents , hardy and tender . The specimen rosette in the mediate isEcheveria‘Ebony ’ ( Zones 9–11 ) .
