Redesigning an old garden space
Today we ’re in Phoenix , Maryland , visiting Sally Barker ’s beautiful garden :
While my garden has been featured many clock time on GPOD(Sally ’s Garden in Maryland , Up Front , Sally ’s Maryland Garden),it ’s been a few years since I sent photograph . As any long - time nurseryman knows there are always changes and additions to be made ! One edits continually as certain plants do n’t live , or do n’t live up to expectations . I finally removed two sections offorsythiaand make new and very happy opportunities . Even best-loved plants sometimes need to be remove as , for example , a group ofAnnabelle hydrangeas(Hydrangea arborescens‘Annabelle ’ , Zone 3 – 9 ) which werepopular deer food for thought . I ca n’t wait for spring to redesign this country .
Here are some photograph from past seasons .

Imagine that this whole area was full of forsythia ! Now azaleas andrhododendrons , amagnoliain the left corner and colorfulground coversare abundant .
Another more shady part of the same sphere . Anoakleaf hydrangea(Hydrangea quercifolia‘Sikes Dwarf ’ , Zone 5 – 9 ) nestled amongsthostasandferns , a blue hydrangea(Hydrangea macrophylla , Zone 5 – 9 ) andGeraniummacrorrhizum(Zone 4 – 8) , my favorite ground cover .
Same bottom withAjuga‘Black Scallop ’ ( Zone 4 – 10),Acorusgramineus‘Minimus ’ ( Zone 5 – 10),Stachys‘Hummelo ’ ( Zone 4 – 8) andAlchemilla(Zone 3 – 8) . It ’s all abouttexture .

More genus Acorus , ferns , and a wonderfulHeuchera‘Raspberry Regal ’ ( Zone 3 – 9 ) , which will bloom pinkish for a recollective while .
Another prospect of the Modern garden . Oenothera‘Siskiyou ’ ( Zone 5 – 9 ) salad days pink in theearly summertime .
Mypatio gardenwith maidenhair fern fern(Adiantumpedatum , Zone 2 – 9 ) , genus Heuchera and lysimachia(Lysimachianummularia‘Aurea ’ , Zone 3 – 8) .

The terrace garden in the rainwater .
A view from the terrace under aJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zone 5 – 9 ) .
Ogon spirea(Spirea thunbergii‘Ogon ’ , Zone 4 – 8) , hakonechloa(Hakonechloamacra , Zone 5 – 9),Geranium macrorrhizumand the star of the backyard , a Natchez crepe myrtle(Lagerstroemia‘Natchez ’ , Zone 6 – 9 ) on the right field .

Sally send in so many great photos we ’re go to revisit this garden again tomorrow , so come back then for more !
