A new garden in a new part of the country
My name is Phillip Oliver , and I sent you photos of myAlabama gardenmany long time ago . Since that clip , my hubby ( Michael ) and I relocated across the country to Vancouver , Washington . It has always been a ambition of mine to hold up and garden in the Pacific Northwest . We have been here six age now and have initiate a new garden from scratch . We downsize when moving here , so this garden is smaller , about a quarter of an acre . I work at a local garden plaza , which helps ( or handicap , bet on how you look at it ) my horticulture obsession .
Here are some photo from this past year . As you could see , the garden has already fill in . Most of it was only pasturage when we moved in .
This is a view of our front garden from the roof , read in September . The front garden is the smallest area and offer about 20 foot from the house to the street .

And here ’s the survey from the street side . The first thing I did was have a fence build to garden around . I am very fond of rose wine , especially theDavid Austinvarieties . The orange rise is ‘ Lady of Shallot ’ . Other rosiness ( not David Austin ) are ‘ Robin Hood ’ and ‘ Radway Sunrise ’ . Behind the pink wine is the shrubSalixintegra‘Hakuro Nishiki ‘ ( dappled willow tree , Zones 5–7 ) and fume tree(Cotinus‘Royal Purple ’ , Zones 3–9 ) . The tree isAcerpseudoplatanus‘Esk Sunset ’ ( Zones 4–7 ) . Perennials includeGeranium‘Rozanne ’ ( zona 5–8),Santolina‘Lemon Queen ’ ( Zones 6–8 ) , andSalvia‘Caradonna ’ .
The front garden logic gate features climbing blush wine ‘ Dublin Bay ’ and ‘ Veilchenblau ’ and two clematis : ‘ Jackmanii Superba ’ ( geographical zone 4–8 ) and ‘ Madame Julia Correvon ’ ( zone 4–9 ) .
I was unfamiliar withCeanothus‘Black Diamond ’ ( California lilac ) until moving here , and now I know it . It spring up incredibly tight . Michael has trained this one into a modest tree diagram .

Our back garden is expectant than the front . It is part on a slope , and I create terraces here . Some of the plants here arePhormium‘Rainbow Queen ’ ( New Zealand flax , Zones 8–10),‘Tiger Eyes ’ sumac(Rhustyphina‘Bailtiger ’ , Zones 4–8),Persicaria‘Red Dragon ’ ( geographical zone 6–9 ) andCotinus‘Golden Spirit ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) . The rose on the lunar month archway at the top of the steps is the rambler ‘ Phyllis Bride ’ .
David Austin rose ‘ Golden Celebration ’ andSpanish lavender(Lavandula stoechas , Zones 7–10 )
Here ’s another scene of the court from the side . The rose are ‘ Cornelia ‘ and ‘ Mutabalis ’ . Like in our former garden , we work up a wall and painted it purpleness . It separate the court from a little garden just off the deck .

The smaller garden ( we call it the “ Pan Garden ” because it features a statue of Pan ) is just off the deck . This is the first area we work on after moving in .
