Use : Paint horse are used for just about every discipline . They are most predominate in western events and as track mounts .
History : In the 1500s , Spanish conquistadors came to South and Central America , lend horse with them . Some of these horse cavalry had pinto grading . Over time , Spanish horse escape , and were traded and stolen by Amerindic tribes . Eventually , pinto horses were found on all the cattle ranch and military mission of Southwest . The Pueblo Indians , who had lived here for hundred , learned to depend on and became excellent equestrian . Through theft and trading , Indians from other tribes in the U.S. soon acquired horses . Several tribes came to have a special warmness for pintos . As large herds of cattle began to spread through the West , ranchers demand a sawhorse that could help manage the Bos taurus . The Quarter Horse breed was developed , mostly as a moo-cow horse . Pinto - marked foals were occasionally born from Quarter Horse breedings , the result of Spanish parentage in the breed . Because American Quarter Horse Association did not agnize foals with pinto scoring , these pattern horse cavalry could not be file . In the sixties , admirers of tell apart Quarter Horses formed the American Paint Horse Association to keep and recognize this patterned horse . Today , the Paint is the second most popular breed in the United States , and the truehearted maturate strain in America .
Conformation : Paints amount in two principal types of patterns : tobiano and overo . Tobianos have both clean and a blue color on their trunk . The dark color can be black , bay , chestnut , buckskin or palomino , and ordinarily covers one or both flanks . All four peg are usually white . In most overos , one or sometimes all four legs are saturnine . Overos have declamatory blanched head markings , like a denuded look , forestage face or cowl face .
