Welcome to Lesley Upton ’s parcelling blog , where she explicate what fruit and veg she is growing on her allotment in September . Here she looks at the bounce Allium cepa , beetroot , carrots , squash , white potato and leeks on her Berkshire secret plan
I ’ve been really pleased with the garden truck from my allotment over the past class . I ’ve had success with broad beans , strawberries , gelt , cultivated carrot , potatoes , sweetcorn , runner beans , French bean , saltation onion and beetroot . Not so good were the onions ( not one was deserving save ) , Allium sativum ( I keep three out of about 20 ) and peas ( they were swamped by weeds because I did n’t pay them enough tending and the pigeons got to them ) . The cauliflowers did n’t do too well , either . possibly I did n’t water them enough .
Growing well , though , are the Brussels sprouts , parsnip and cabbages .
Spring onions and beetroot
I grew ‘ Guardsman ’ spring onions this year , or else of my usual ‘ White Lisbon ’ , and I ’m really proud of with the issue . I must have picked about five bunches over the preceding couple of months – and they have quite an intense flavour . I ’ll certainly be growing them again next year .
The ‘ Boltardy ’ beetroot also grew well . Many mass at the apportioning read it was a good class for beetroot , whichever potpourri they sowed . I ’ll deposit to my try - and - trusted ‘ Boltardy ’ again next year , I think . My neighbour surely likes it !
Carrots and crush
For the first time ever , I had a harvest of carrot originate in the ground . unremarkably I grow ‘ other Nantes ’ in tubs or plastic containers , but this year I also try sow in them straight into the ground . And I was so pleased with the crop ! project are just a few from a row I sow next to the spring onions . I seem to have finally discover the grunge they like to grow in !
The Juglans cinerea squash should be quick next month , so I ’m draw sure they receive plenty of water . I ’m always catch out by how far they spread – and this year is no exception . I ’m trying to ‘ train ’ them to grow in a particular centering !
Potatoes
Wow ! What a yr for main craw potatoes . The row of ‘ Picasso ’ potatoes I planted back in March has really issue forth respectable . In fact , I have never grown white potato vine so full-grown . There are emphatically quite a few baking potato in what I ’ve dug up so far , and other people on the allotment have said their potatoes are a unspoiled size , too .
The ‘ Desiree ’ variety were good , but not so big . I ’ve develop both motley for a few years now and will continue to do so .
Leeks
So far , the leek are the proficient I ’ve ever grow – apart from the leek rust . The bright orangish pustule on the leaves are a dead game show , and I recall the humid circumstance a few weeks ago might have contributed to it . Unfortunately , there ’s not a lot I can do , but remove the worst affected leaves and make certain I do n’t compost them .
I wo n’t be pull up the leek until October at the former , so I hope they do n’t get a pot worse . I have n’t had leek rust for a few years now – last twelvemonth it was leek moths that cause the wrong !
