I Meet the Coolest People!

Wow , what glorious gardeners we ’ve met on our travels this spring ! Although everyone ’s account is different , all of them find serenity , energy , health , and spirituality out of doors . In Lorena , Elizabeth DeMaria ’s springiness garden presently will break loose with summer flowers for pollinators and birds . We visited an East Austin backyard aboriginal plant micro - prairie , tended by John Hart Asher ( Environmental Designer at theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center ) and his cooperator , Bonnie Evridge . Their chickens handle pest control when not laying nut . AtCommunity First ! , a self - sustainable village for the homeless , we saw how growing and eating fresh , constitutive food makes a difference both in soul and organic structure . In Kempner , Mrs. Saigon Farms ( Carolin Le ) astound us with her nutrient forest , a H.M.S. Bounty in herbs , vegetables , and greens that are “ a pharmacy in my backyard . ”It ’s made quite a difference of opinion for her hubby , a U.S. Army vet , who was injure on obligation . Since so many locavore - dedicate are sweet on beekeeping these days , we met with Tara Chapman fromTwo hive Honey . At theSustainable Food Center , she tended hives in an bee house design by University of Texas grad students . Tanya Phillips and Chuck Reburn , founders ofBee Friendly Austin , schooled us in the fascinating details . And we pay back to see our first swarm , as a queen and her new bee squad went planetary house hunting , rapidly provided by Tanya and Chuck . In San Antonio , Richard and Christine Alcorta step us through their organic technique in cinder blocks that yield pounds of nutrient and herbs every time of year .
