Let’s grow petunias from cuttings! A budget friendly way to get more petunias to fill your containers, beds and hanging baskets.
Want to know how to mature petunia from cutting ? If you are like me and garden on a budget purchasing annual every year can seem counter intuitive . Or you have a particular petunia you love and require more of it .
Why grow petunias from cuttings
Since my source for inexpensive 6 packs of yearbook is no longer I have relied on grocery fund choice and I even picked up genus Petunia at Wal - Mart . My petunia seedling failed this year , bummer , but I am pass to start more seeds soon .
This post contains affiliate links . If you make a purchase after get across a liaison I may make a modest commission at no toll to you .
So I decided to get set out with what I have and make more . This is not a fashion to get full profuse plant rapidly . You are go bad to have to be patient and enjoy the flush later on in the season ( unless you start in February ) . But the expiation is deserving the wait .

A great sentence to take up genus Petunia from cutting is when you snip up orrefurbish your leggy petunia in mid - Summer .
Did you cognise theProven Winners Supertuniasare started from cuttings and not seeds ?
Prepare pots of soil
I re - used a six - battalion container , filled it with the potting culture medium and water it well . Many times I use thesesmall 2 to 3 inch credit card pots I convey on Amazon , they have go me for 10 plus year and are the perfect size for cuttings .
I did n’t use them this time as I was in a haste and just grabbed the closest thing I had which was the 6 pack container .
Choose Petunia to take cuttings from
This is one of the genus Petunia I will take cuttings from today . I bought this one in a 4 pack from Wal - Mart for $ 3 . I bought these in early April and pot them up to grow on so they would be large enough to take cuttings from .
In the video recording you also see another I take cuttings from . The pace by step telecasting is at the remnant of this post .
Choose stem to cut
You want a root that will be long enough . You want almost 3 to 4 in of cutting to stick into the potting mass medium . See the DIY potting soil I use here .
The longest stem on this genus Petunia is the one with the great flower blooming . I detest to cut it off when it is so pretty but oh well .
Take your Cutting
Usingbypass prunersor a cutting puppet of your choice , cut just below the leafage lymph node .
Remove leaves from petunia cutting
lie the genus Petunia cutting on your plane surface orpotting judiciary , take out leave and side shoots .
you could pinch them off with your thumbnail or apply a crisp knife to sever the leaves from the base .
It looks middling pitiful without all the adorable leaves and flower but soon this slight film editing will be sprouting new ontogenesis and then later on more beautiful flowers .

Rooting Hormone or not?
Dip the bottom end into root endocrine . This is agood steady down internal secretion for petunias . ( some say you do n’t need root hormone for petunias , I think I will try out with that and get back to you )
Put the root hormone into a small container , do not dip directly into the bottle as it can spread plant disease and/or fungus . Here I am using a pocket-size glass votive with a small amount of rooting hormone in the bottom .
rap the excess hormone off .

Stick cutting into planting soil
Using a tool large enough around to create an indent . I used a sharper , it is overnice and fill out which create a unspoilt sizing hole to accommodate the thinning into .
The soil being loaded save the soil from caving in when removing the sharpie .
Now slide the petunia cutting into the pickle left by the Sharpie and press the grunge in around it gently yet steadfastly .

So far I have 3 cuttings from 2 plant . These were not large plants yet so I finish up by grabbing another petunia to cut from .
Place in a cool place.
I use these vaulted palpebra over the planting trays to keep the cuttings from drying out too much .
Others arrogate this lead to fungus and moulder and they choose a obnubilate organization . But who has that variety of set up other than master ?
For me these lids have work keen and have ventilation on the top . I could n’t find the exact same single on Amazon to connect for you but these are skinny . I have used and abused mine for 10 positive old age so they have been worth every penny . Mine start out clear but have ambered over the class .

Or you’re able to make your own DIY Propagation Box that wreak like a glasshouse .
I have these cuttings in the nursery and while that work while it is still cool out it is now getting too hot . I will range them on a table under my pack of cards where they can get bright light but not verbatim sunlight and it remain cool there in the warmer months .
Expect to see roots in 3 to 4 calendar week . Before you recognize it you could fill a bathtub or container with your beautiful petunias .

Be careful , propagating works this path can get habit-forming . Fair warning !
