Propagation
Things are make feverish , with pricking out or pot on an almost day-by-day bodily process . Serves me ripe .
Unless I recollect a seedling is particularly deserving I have been pricking out initially into half seed tray , usually just a few but up to 15 or so of a character . There is normally room in a one-half tray for 3 or 4 different varieties to grow on for a few weeks , particularly as I usually prickle out when very small .

Once the seedlings search like they are crowd together each other I move on to single 7 cm pots .
I treated myself to 5 pocketbook of John Innes # 3 compost ( I had some vouchers off the back of my fall steal plant life purchasing frenzy ) so I have been using that for potting on , with some vermiculite tote up for a fleck of drainage and water retention . Last twelvemonth I killed a load of young plants by gayly mix in a load of fertiliser to average multi intention compost . It was much too rich and they die of overeating . The reward of JI3 is the decennary of enquiry that die in to the nutrient mix , it should be just right . In theory JI2 is intended for initial potting on with JI3 intended for subsequent potting on . One of my multiplication books recommends going straight to JI3 if plants are likely to spend a while in these pots . Given I am unlikely to keep up with the potting on I have gone with JI3 . In the past tense I have usually used multi - purpose compost so am intrigued to see if this make any difference .
I am trying to grow alstromeria from ejaculate this year . I recently corrupt a record book co - authored by Christopher Lloyd on produce flower from germ . It contains a bit of banter and some good change - specific advice . The alstromeria section name to some inquiry that was done on the optimal way of convince alstromeria to germinate . The advice I followed was to have them in the heated judiciary for 3 weeks , then in the fridge for 3 week , then back in the heated bench for 3 weeks at which power point I could expect sprouting . If that holds true I am on the final straight , they are almost 2 weeks into their final 3 workweek stretch .

The advice also said they do n’t appreciate being mire about with so it is best to seed 3 or 4 seeded player in a 9 cm pot then plant out integral , whence they will form a decent clunk . We shall see .
Another variant on a report , if the seedling have peculiarly long roots when prick out , I have been moving them to deep 1L pots rather than seed trays . 8 or 10 fit round the boundary and 3 or 4 in the middle . Cosmos and calendula have extend down this route . After a while I will split the group and dope up individually .
I ’m vellicate by how much these small acer davidii seedling look like mini trees . They get to be very large so I have to decide what to do . I might have a go at bonsai , no theme what that involve . Mind you , I have to keep it active first . I grew 1 genus Acer osakazuki from seed last yr , but currently it is doing a upright depression of 3 inches of deadened stick . It might just be sluggish out of wintertime sleeping . Or it might be a goner .

I am growing a few unlike varieties of digitalis this class , they are all doing quite well , the d. purpurea albiflora were gravid enough to pot on singly shortly after taking this photo . In possibility I am being remorseless about culling excess seedlings at this phase . In pattern I sometimes ( often ) fail . In this cause I potted up 9 robust seedlings and composted a like amount . I was planning on 3 . Oh well .
There are too many to admit everything here so I will conclude with a geranium .
I ’ll be back in a brace of calendar week with more seedling history .
