A new gardener finds what works in his space

Today we ’re visiting with Paul Brothe in Newburgh , New York .

horticulture is comparatively newfangled to me . I moved to upstate New York two years ago from Denver . In Denver , I hold out in the city and did not have much of a yard . In Newburgh , I have almost six Acre . When I moved here there were few bloom plants . Over the past two years I have had a goal to ameliorate the landscape with plant life good to bee , birds , and butterfly stroke .

Here are some picture from my garden this autumn .

Thisbutterfly bush(Buddleia davidii , Zones 5–9 ) was grown from seed last twelvemonth . It has become a enceinte bush that attracts many butterfly and bee .

Gaillardia(Gaillardiapulchella , Zones 2–11 ) is one of my favorites . I purposefully take a photo with theseed heads . I am gathering these and will plant them next spring . My original plant life was started from seed indoors . I find it easy to uprise . The bees teem all over the flowers in the summer . The yellow - tipped flower petal are beautiful .

Ageratum(Ageratumhoustonianum , one-year ) is a lovely plant . It is one of my experiments this year . I have been developing a ignored Akka of my property into awoodland garden . I sow the ageratum seminal fluid in late spring . The tuft of heyday are exceptionally sympathetic . Earlier in the summertime I had some cervid damage to the Eupatorium coelestinum — a unvarying trouble , as they ostensibly will nibble on anything in my yard . I still have many flush , however .

declination - blooming bearded irises are magnificent . Just as everything else is fading , they give brilliant , velvety pappa of semblance . Last yr I responded to a Craigslist advertizing from an aged char who wanted avail thinning her irises . I took home many rootstalk — for innocent .

A friend from Minnesota visited for the first prison term in early bounce . When he saw my grand he declared I needed somedahlias(Dahlia variablilis , Zones 8–10 or as tender incandescent lamp ) . His parents are avid grower of dahlias .

A braggart boxful of gift dahlias make it in the mail . They have provided many month of spectacular color .

Zinnias(Zinnia elegans , annual ) are easy to maturate from seed and are beloved by bees and butterflies . I grew C of them this summer . This is a purple Zinderella . Some of the Zinderella zinnias are duple flowers , but many are single . The mottled petal were especially attractive .

Thehydrangea(Hydrangea paniculata , Zones 3–8 ) by the front threshold walkway need pruning .

Having already take vases in the home with drying panicles , I shifted my tending outdoors and arranged large bouquet in the urns in my railway yard .

This urn is surrounded by wildasters . I did not plant them . They seeded themselves and have been bloom for months .

My garden is an experiment . I am constantly learning , researching , and experimenting . I care the satisfaction of growingplants from seed . Because my yard is magnanimous , it is the neighborhood park . My neighbor walks her newborn baby and yearling every day through the park . My garden then is n’t just for me ; it is something I share with everyone around me.(Paul shares more of his garden on his web log . )
