Gardening
I have an sweep of recently rear barren fencing material ( see what I did there ? ) to wrap up . It ’s that foul orangey people of color from the wood treatment . It will eventually fleet to an easier on the eye brownness , but it does bet middling desolate . in the first place in the calendar week I put up some vine eyes and conducting wire with the idea of training something or other up the fencing to make it less fugly .
I had a couple of panel and posts to put in at the greenhouse end of the fence so I went to B&Q for the necessary stuff ( this ultimately became a massively knotty and gently stressful event , call for having to hire one of their vans , but that ’s a whole other story ) . Anyway , whilst at B&Q I had a peek at the clearance flora section . Very glad I did . They were selling seemly size Clematis , many unlike varieties , for £ 1 each , reduce from £ 8 , £ 10 , even £ 20 in some cases . As far as I could separate , the only reason they were flogging them off cheap is that they do n’t take care very interesting at this time of class ; just bare stems with the beginnings of this year ’s shoots . At a chaw each I almost bought the entire stock but managed to contain myself to “ just ” 17 . These are not the straggly young flora you see in supermarket in the spring . I ’d say these are 2 or 3 age onetime . They will look fabulous and will soon cover that fencing . This is truly a dual joy – I ’m a Clematis devotee and who does n’t have it away a bargain ? Boo ya . The varieties I got are :

Among this lot were two pots that B&Q were selling as a “ trio ” of three miscellany together . I decide to split them , which need teasing apart the three etymon balls . I should in all probability have potted them on to grow a bit big before planting them out . But I did nt -at 33p each I can afford to be a minuscule cavalier !
After giving them a good soak , I planted them out at about 1 - 2 ft space along the fencing , with the aim of muffle the fencing in foliage and colour . I ’ve dug biggish hollow using the post hole power shovel , about double the breadth and one-half again the profoundness of the pot . That trap shovel is awesome , by the agency , spend a penny short study of planting holes and easier on the back and knees !
The soil in that boundary line is somewhat arenaceous so I ’ve added manure and compost to the bottom of the planting hole and also interracial with the surface soil to backfill . This is all with a view to well retaining wet as Clematis are athirst ladies . I also added a handful of osseous tissue meal to the bottom of the fix before putting the plant in .

Fugly fence
There are at least two schools of thinking about how deep to plant clematis . Many say that they should be imbed with the jacket 2 or 3 , even 6 inches below the surface , some say that the crown should be level with , perchance a midget bit below the soil surface . The system of logic for the former is do to with wilt , a disease that can do for a Clematis quite quickly . means back when , someone opine that burying the crown deep would , in the event that a plant succumbs to droop , at least encourage the flora to throw up newfangled stems the following year . However , this advice , although long in the gift , is accordng to some apparently amyth , passed on blindly in Holy Scripture , magazines , clematis suppliers , web log even , I defy say . No actual grounds it create a blind bit of difference . Even if it did , not all Clematis varieties are susceptible to wilt disease , most are n’t , so for those it is doubtless useless and potentially harmful . A slight more helpfully , theRHSsay bury if its a large flowered crossbreed that heyday may to june , since they are susceptible to wilt , for everything else the diadem should be at soil level . There are an painful pile of sources that take a firm stand on immerse them in a big hole so it ’s a minefield of conflicting selective information . I ’ve compromised and left them with the crown just 1 inch below the surface .
Mixing up variety show fall at the peril of commix up pruning group , which is likely to get difficulties when it comes to pruning as they will of necessity entwine . I cognize from experience that trying to unknot one that does n’t need much pruning from one that needs cut correctly back is tricky . I ’ve thus establish all the Group 3 establish down this fence line , to keep it simple – they can all be cut right back to 6 - 12 inches before the spring each year . I ’ve also reduce all the new plant life back to 6 column inch to boost more shoot . I ’ll also lop back to a pair of bud a few time once they get growing to get lots of stem , hence lots of foliage and flowers , hence less fencing visible .
I retrieve that the workshop plant label have a habit of disappearing or disintegrating and then I do nt know what rationalize group the clem is in , nor which one I ’m shoot cuttings from . To avoid this I ’ve double over up with a unembellished flora label tied to the wire . I ran out of time to plant the sleep this weekend . I ’ll stud the residue , all pruning Group 2 , around the rest period of the garden another clip , they ’ll be happy enough in their pots till then .

Back saver
I ’ll be back , with photos when they have all grown up and flowered , this year I desire , and also for a stake or three on the cuttings I ’ll take . I ’ve previously had a sub-5 % success charge per unit with Clematis cuttings so I ’m await forward to honorable fortune using the het up prop bench this year . I ’ll certainly have plenty of material to opt from …
