Our social media feeds were flooded with Great Gardening Contest2020 entries from Upper Midwest gardeners of all skill level , backgrounds and growing trend . A control board of credentialed judges reviewed all the entries , and we ’re excited to share this year ’s champions in each category . you may see more about the competition in the November / December effect ofNorthern Gardener .

Outdoor Gardens – Amy Kainz ( @milkweed.and.daisies )

Amy Kainz ’s backyard pollinator garden is a evidence Monarch Waystation and a suburban oasis for wildlife . The garden of Mary Cielinski earned the second place award in outdoor gardens.

Each time of year , Quinn Venstra fills large 20 - by-22 - inch out-of-door planters in her Brookfield , Wis. , yard . This winning container features coleus she cut back this fountain and summer and repurposed for a drop Día de los Muertos theme . practice to composting and never using coarse fertilizers or chemicals anywhere in her yard , she focalise on keeping her plants healthy with rich soil , gobs of sunshine and regular watering . Quinn ’s gardening skills seize the hearts of both her neighbor and her 3 - year - previous , who loves exploring nature in their yard .

A cheery Laurus nobilis windowpane is one of Isabel Pereira ’s favorite spots in her home . Judging by this picture , her houseplants fuck this blank , too ! Oxalis , sansevieria and orchids tote up grain and coloured blooms and foliage to her home and give her a reason to dig in the soil all class long – even during those farseeing Minnesota wintertime .
