A garden that keeps on keeping on

receive to Evelyn Drake ’s garden !

I so much enjoy exposure from others ’ garden , so I decided it was time to share . We would n’t have this post otherwise ! I garden in rural northwestern Illinois , where the weather condition and wildlife “ visitor ” can take their toll . While I like to believe there is a plan , I ’m a sucker for anything novel , and so it often becomes “ cramscaping . ” I really enjoy direct advantage of volunteers , and so I watch for them as I am weeding . We had a very harsh winter , and I ’m hop it has not hurt too many plants !

This Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree peony(Paeoniahybrid , Zones 3–8 ) had more than 150 flower ! I counted them while deadheading .

It ’s not really meant for them ! Harry Lauder ’s walk stick(Corylus avellana‘Contorta ’ , Zones 4–8 ) , a lily-white birch(Betulasp . ) started from a friend ’s seedling , and a fresh planting of winterberry(Ilex verticillata , Zones 3–9 ) make up this small-scale bed . The Harry Lauder ’s walking stick is kind of taking over . Maybe the deer will prune ?

Later in summertime , daylillies(Hemerocallishybrids , Zones 4–10 ) steal the show . They are very tolerant of our weather .
